As a blogger, I am on the internet a lot, which means that my kids assume it is a safe zone. One of the hardest things to do as a parent these days is to explain to children the dangers that lurk within the internet. With June being designated National Internet Safety Month, Cox Communications will be hosting a series of events to help us teach our children.
These events will kick off with a live stream “Tweet Up” on Thursday, June 28th at 6:00 pm (ET), with children’s advocate John Walsh, from America’s Most Wanted. He’ll be discussing online safety and answering questions from bloggers. You can watch and participate in the live stream here: http://budurl.com/CoxTakeChargeLA (Hashtag: #CoxTakeCharge)
In addition, Cox Louisiana will also host a state-wide Internet Safety Day during the Tweet Up, at each of our retail lobbies in Acadiana, Baton Rouge and New Orleans!
Hera are some reasons why is Internet safety important?
Parents used to only have to worry about monitoring the home computer to keep their kids safer online. But today, Internet use is doubling every two years, and kids have access to the Internet through mobile devices, such as smartphones, handheld gaming devices, game consoles and tablets. The average family uses 5 Internet-enabled devices at home. Mobile devices and gaming consoles are widely used by tweens to access web content.
To help drive this point home, Cox recently conducted a Tween Internet Survey for kids ages 10-13 and their parents. Check out the results in this infographic:
To learn more about Cox’s Take Charge Initiaive and their national internet safety program, you can visit the official Cox Take Charge Site. Power is knowledge, and as parents, we continue to learn how to keep our kids safe when they are on the internet!
