My seven year old (going on 16) daughter loves anything that is “do it yourself”, from coloring to glitter, if she is the one to make something new she is ecstatic! When I learned about the My Ribbon Barrette Maker my first thought was “how difficult is this, can my 7 year old do it alone”. I’m not what you would call “crafty” by any means, not only am I not good at crafts I don’t particularly enjoy them! So with MYFBM’s assurance that I could actually make a Ribbon Barrette I decided to give it a try.
Here is some information about MYFBM from their site: It’s simple yet brilliant. While babysitting his granddaughters, they asked David to make friendship bracelets with them. This is a trend that’s had a recent surge in popularity as moms teach their kids this age old tradition with a bit of nostalgia. Friendship Bracelets are seen all over TV, and Tweens everywhere are making them. The process of making them involves securing a knot (online instructions will tell you to pin to your pants or hold with a nail in the wall!) and keeping the strings in order while knotting the threads. After one experience with the grandkids, David decided their must be a better way! Crorey Creations was able to tap into some of the best talent in Detroit (engineers, graphic designers, website developers) who have unfortunately found themselves unemployed in this tough economy. After many engineered drawings, prototypes and focus groups we now have a perfected, patented product. My Friendship Bracelet Maker is the right product (Quality Toy in the coveted craft sector), at the right time (current trend..focused on the right target demo = TWEENS) at the right price (under $25) and has already been named Dr. Toy’s “Best Vacation Products” Winner for 2010.
MYFBM was nice enough to send us a My Ribbon Barrette Maker to review. As soon as my daughter saw the box she was 100% in! Ribbons, beads, all for barrettes you make yourself, how could this not be the best thing in the world? So during the school holidays we cleared off a space on the table and got to work. I read the directions to her once and then we got to make a Ribbon Barrette. The directions were easy to follow and once we had everything set up she starting doing this herself. I helped with the set-up, the finish and showed her how to tie the knots in the end after putting on the beads, other than that she did it all herself. She also decided that this was the best idea in the world to give all her 7 year old BFFs for Christmas! So she is currently at the table making every known color combination of Ribbon Barrettes for every little girl in Ms. Stacie’s 2nd grade class! I would definitely recommend this for a child who enjoys doing crafts and of course loves barrettes as much a my daughter does, it takes little or no parental intervention (a plus at my house) and is very simple. I really like that you can purchase refills for the Ribbon Maker, a huge plus for my daughter who will never get tired of multi colored Ribbon Barrettes! We have purchased friendship bracelet kits in the past and given up on them as too difficult and confusing…I am planning to purchase the Friendship Bracelet Maker as a Christmas present for my daughter. After our experience with the Ribbon Barrette Maker I think it will actually be something we finish!
My Ribbon Barrette Maker retails for $24.99 and includes 8 wave barrettes, 8 standard barrettes, 32 ribbons, 256 tri-beads, easy-to-follow instructions. This maker features a built-in storage tray for organization and includes a specially designed ribbon loom. This product is recommended for kids ages 6 and up. The My Ribbon Barrette Maker can be purchased online at amazon.com.
