Prehistoric reptiles known as dinosaurs came to exist during of the Middle to Late Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era, about 230 million years ago. They were individuals of a subclass of reptiles called the Archosaurs, it means ruling reptiles, a group that also involves birds and crocodiles.
Scientists first started learning dinosaurs during the 1820s, when they discovered the bones of a large reptile they named a Megalosaurus buried in the English countryside. Sir Richard Owen, Britain’s leading palaeontologist, first coined the word dinosaur in 1842. Owen had analyzed bones from three different creatures – Megalosaurus, Iguanadon and Hylaeosaurus. Every one of them lived on land and was much bigger than any living reptile. Applying this information, Owen identified these three dinosaurs as a special group of reptiles, which he named Dinosauria. The term comes from the ancient Greek word deinos (terrible) and sauros (lizard or reptile).
Since that time, dinosaur fossils have been found all over the world and analyzed by palaeontologists to determine more about many different types of these creatures. Scientists divided the dinosaur group into two orders: the “bird-hipped” and the “lizard-hipped”. And then, dinosaurs have been split up into numerous genera and each genera into more species. Some dinosaurs walked on two legs, some walked on four legs, and some were able to change between these two walking positions. Some moved rapidly, while others were slow. The majority of dinosaurs were plant-eaters, but some hunted other dinosaurs to be able to survive.
During the time the dinosaurs appeared, all continents were connected together in one land and encircled by one gigantic ocean. The land began to break apart into separate continents at the time of the Early Jurassic Period. Dinosaurs inexplicably vanished at the end of the Cretaceous Period, near 65 million years ago. Besides the great volcanic process that was happening at that time, scientists have also discovered that a huge meteorite hit the Earth 65. 5 million years ago.
Dinosaurs still live on in research paper of palaeontology and new information about this amazing giant creatures is regularly being found.
If you admire dinosaurs then you should watch the new 3D movie called Walking with Dinosaurs. The main storyline takes place 70 million years ago at the time of the Late Cretaceous period, it presents the life of three Pachyrhinosaurus named Patchi, Scowler, and Juniper, how they grow up from fun toddlers into mature dinosaurs. Three dinosaurs are very good friends with the Alexornis bird named Alex. Patchi usually gets in trouble, Scowler, Patchi’s older brother, is the complete opposite, he is challenging and wishes to become a leader.
